Lorestan is the land of the Lurs, who speak Luri, a language close to Persian. Its valleys yielded the Luristan bronzes, finely cast horse fittings, weapons and ornaments of the early first millennium BCE, now in museums around the world.

Its capital, Khorramabad, is overlooked by the Falak-ol-Aflak, a fortress on a rock in the city centre whose foundations go back to the Sasanian era.

The Asiatic lion and the Lion and Sun

Iran's lions disappeared in the 1940s, but for centuries a lion holding a sword beneath a rising sun stood for the Iranian state.
