Ossetian is the last living descendant of the Scytho-Sarmatian languages, the speech of the Iranian nomads who once ranged from the Black Sea to Central Asia. The Ossetians are the heirs of the Alans of the medieval Caucasus.

Their Nart sagas, epic tales of heroes, share themes with the wider Iranian epic tradition. Ossetians live in North Ossetia, in Russia, and in South Ossetia, across the main ridge of the Caucasus.
