The province takes its name from its two historic tribal regions. Its capital, Yasuj, sits beneath the Dena range, among the highest peaks of the Zagros.

The mountain pass often identified as the Persian Gate, where the Achaemenid commander Ariobarzanes held back Alexander's army in 330 BCE, lies near Yasuj.
