The Helmand River runs south-west across Afghanistan to the Sistan basin, which Iran and Afghanistan share. Zaranj, capital of Nimruz, is the successor of Zarang, the ancient capital of Sistan.

Near Lashkar Gah stand the ruins of Bost and Lashkari Bazar, the palace city of the Ghaznavid sultans in the eleventh century, with its great arch.

In the Shahnameh

Nimruz is one of the names the Shahnameh gives to Rostam's homeland.

Shahnameh

Rostam, Rakhsh and the seven labours

Iran's greatest hero and his matchless horse take the short, deadly road to rescue a foolish king: a lion, a desert, a dragon, a witch and the White Div.

Shahnameh

Rostam and Sohrab

A father and son who have never met face each other on the battlefield. It is the most heartbreaking episode in the Shahnameh, and Ferdowsi knows it.
