Ilam
ایلامA mountainous border province of oak forests and Kurdish and Lur communities, looking down onto the Mesopotamian plain.
Ilam lies on the western slopes of the Zagros, facing Iraq. It takes its name from Elam, the ancient civilisation centred further south in Khuzestan.
Its oak forests and valleys were long the summer pastures of nomadic tribes, and its Qajar-era governors built small castles here, such as the Qal'eh-ye Vali in Ilam city.
