Listen to this reed, how it complains, telling the tale of separations.

Rumi

The story

Rumi’s Masnavi begins with the reed flute, the ney, which complains and tells the story of separation because it was cut from its reed bed. The opening lines are among the most recited verses in the Persian language.

Persiahaus Studio set the first couplet in ink Nastaliq on a clay ground, over a white circle, inside a ruled frame with dark lapis stars at the corners. It is the written companion to the house print Song of the Reed.
