Hafez · Ghazal 75 · Not for nothing

The faal · signs

Something has been stirring in you, and you have noticed signs around you that you cannot quite explain. Hafez repeats one phrase through this ghazal: it is not for nothing. The sleepy glance, the twisted curl, the rose's torn collar, even your own sighs, all carry meaning. Trust that what you feel has a cause, and that it is pointing you somewhere. You need not announce it to everyone; simply pay attention. In time the reason behind these signs will make itself known.

The ghazal in English

The sleep of that bewitching narcissus of yours is not for nothing;
the twist of that dishevelled curl of yours is not for nothing.

Milk still flowed from your lip when I would say:
"This sugar around your salt-cellar is not for nothing."

Long may you live, for I know for certain
the arrow of your lashes in that bow is not for nothing.

You are afflicted with trouble, grief and the sorrow of parting:
O heart, these laments and cries of yours are not for nothing.

Last night the wind passed from her street into the rose garden:
O rose, this torn collar of yours is not for nothing.

Though the heart hides the pain of love from people,
Hafez, these weeping eyes of yours are not for nothing.
