Hafez · Ghazal 74 · It does not come to so much
حاصل کارگه کون و مکان این همه نیستباده پیش آر که اسباب جهان این همه نیست
از دل و جان شرف صحبت جانان غرض استغرض این است، وگرنه دل و جان این همه نیست
منت سدره و طوبی ز پی سایه مکشکه چو خوش بنگری ای سرو روان، این همه نیست
دولت آن است که بی خون دل آید به کنارور نه با سعی و عمل باغ جنان این همه نیست
پنج روزی که در این مرحله مهلت داریخوش بیاسای زمانی که زمان این همه نیست
بر لب بحر فنا منتظریم ای ساقیفرصتی دان که ز لب تا به دهان این همه نیست
زاهد ایمن مشو از بازی غیرت، زنهارکه ره از صومعه تا دیر مغان این همه نیست
دردمندی من سوخته زار و نزارظاهرا حاجت تقریر و بیان این همه نیست
نام حافظ رقم نیک پذیرفت ولیپیش رندان رقم سود و زیان این همه نیست
You may be straining after something as though everything depended on it. Hafez gently loosens your grip: the goods of the world, the rewards of toil, even the heavenly shade, are not so much, set beside love and good company. The best fortune is the kind that arrives without heart's blood. You have only a few days here, so rest a while and enjoy them. Hold your plans lightly, keep your heart for what truly matters, and let go of keeping score.
The yield of the workshop of all being is not so much;
bring wine, for the goods of the world are not so much.
The aim of heart and soul is the honour of the beloved's company;
that is the aim, for otherwise heart and soul are not so much.
Do not be indebted to the Lote-tree and the Tuba tree for their shade,
for when you look well, O walking cypress, they are not so much.
True fortune is what comes into your arms without heart's blood;
otherwise, won by toil and effort, the garden of paradise is not so much.
In the five days of grace you have at this stage of the road,
rest well for a while, for time is not so much.
We are waiting on the shore of the sea of passing away, O saqi:
count it a chance, for from lip to mouth is not so far.
Zahid, do not feel safe from the game of jealousy; beware,
for the road from the cloister to the Magians' temple is not so long.
The pain of this burned, weeping, wasted man
clearly needs no great explanation.
The name of Hafez has been written down as good, but
to the rends, the record of profit and loss is not so much.
