Hafez · Ghazal 76 · No refuge but your threshold

The faal · refuge

When the world presses hard, Hafez does not fight back with a sword; he turns to the one place where he feels safe. This ghazal invites you to find your own threshold, a love, a practice, a person, and to rest your head there. It also gives one of Hafez's simplest rules: hurt no one, and otherwise live as you wish. Whatever you are facing, you need not meet hostility with hostility. Move gently, guard what is precious in your heart, and let what truly shelters you hold you.

The ghazal in English

I have no refuge in the world but your threshold;
there is no place to rest my head but this door.

When the enemy draws his sword, I throw down my shield,
for my only sword is a lament and a sigh.

Why should I turn my face from the street of the tavern,
when there is no custom or way in the world better than this?

If time sets fire to the harvest of my life,
tell it, "Burn," for to me it is not worth a blade of straw.

I am the servant of the roguish narcissus of that slender cypress,
who, drunk on the wine of pride, will not glance at anyone.

Do not go about hurting others, and do whatever you wish,
for in our law there is no sin but this.

Ride with a tight rein, O king of the realm of beauty,
for there is no roadside without someone pleading for justice.

Since I see snares along the road on every side,
I have no refuge better than the shelter of her curl.

Do not give the treasury of Hafez's heart to the curl and the mole,
for affairs like these are beyond the reach of every dark one.
