Hafez · Ghazal 303 · I have caught the breath of love
The long night is ending. Hafez catches the scent of the friend on the north wind and sees the lightning of union, and his counsel is generous: leave the story of the night of separation untold, in thanks that the day has come. If a rift is healing, let it heal fully. When someone you love comes seeking peace, you can forgive more than you thought, even the hurts that came from others. Welcome what returns with an open heart, and do not dwell on the darkness that came before.
I have caught the breath of love and seen the lightning of union;
come, for I would die for your scent, O north wind.
O camel-driver, by the beloved's beauty, halt and alight,
for longing for that beauty has left me no gracious patience.
The tale of the night of separation is best left untold,
in thanks that the day of union has lifted its veil.
Come, for we have hung the rose-scattering curtain of the eye's seven chambers
with designs from the workshop of imagination.
Since the friend is set on peace and is asking pardon,
one can forgive the rival's cruelty, whatever it has been.
There is nothing in my narrow heart but the thought of your mouth;
may no one, like me, chase an impossible fancy.
Hafez the stranger has been slain by your love; but
pass by our grave, for our blood is lawful to you.
