I have caught the breath of love

Hafez

I have caught the breath of love and seen the lightning of union;

come, for I would die for your scent, O north wind.

O camel-driver, by the beloved's beauty, halt and alight,

for longing for that beauty has left me no gracious patience.

The tale of the night of separation is best left untold,

in thanks that the day of union has lifted its veil.

Come, for we have hung the rose-scattering curtain of the eye's seven chambers

with designs from the workshop of imagination.

Since the friend is set on peace and is asking pardon,

one can forgive the rival's cruelty, whatever it has been.

There is nothing in my narrow heart but the thought of your mouth;

may no one, like me, chase an impossible fancy.

Hafez the stranger has been slain by your love; but

pass by our grave, for our blood is lawful to you.
