The faal · reconnection

This ghazal begins with good news carried on the north wind: the time of reunion is near. Hafez remembers the old dwelling now emptied, the companions gone, the banquet hall quiet, and yet he greets the messenger with joy: welcome, welcome, come. If you have been waiting through a long night of distance, take heart. The story of love does not break off, even when words fail. And if you need to grieve, grieve freely; the lament of lovers is sweet, and it too carries you towards the dawn.

The ghazal in English

May you bring good news, O north wind,
that the time of union is reaching us.

The story of love has no breaking off;
here the tongue of speech has broken.

What has become of Salma, and of those who dwell at Dhu Salam?
Where are our neighbours, and how do they fare?

The dwelling is effaced after its days of well-being;
ask the ruins how it fares.

In the beauty of perfection you have won my heart's wish;
may God turn from you the evil eye that strikes perfection.

O courier from the sanctuary, may God protect you;
welcome, welcome! Come, come!

The courtyard of the banquet hall has been left empty
of companions and of the brimming cup.

For now the night of separation has cast its shadow;
let us see what games the night-walkers of fancy will play.

Our Turk looks at no one;
ah, such pride, such rank and glory!

Hafez, how long love and patience?
The lament of lovers is sweet: lament.
