The faal · justice

This is a ghazal in praise of a just king, and its closing lines carry a calm assurance for you. The turning of the heavens, Hafez says, bends towards justice; those who do wrong do not reach their goal. Be glad, and do not let anxious, idle thoughts about what you will receive take over your heart; your portion is in wiser hands than your worry. Keep a window open for the soul and a door for the heart, as the generous court does, and let joy keep hold of the music.

The ghazal in English

Ruler of the world, Nusrat al-Din, the perfect king,
Yahya ibn Muzaffar, the just sovereign of the world:

O you whose court, the refuge of Islam, stands open,
a window for the soul and a door for the heart upon the face of the earth,

reverence for you is a duty binding on soul and reason;
your bounty flows over all being and place and embraces them.

On the first day a single drop of ink from your pen
fell on the face of the moon, and every question was solved.

When the sun saw that black mole, it said in its heart:
"If only I were that fortunate dark one."

O King, the sky is dancing and whirling at your banquet;
do not let the hand of joy let go of the hem of this music.

Drink wine and bestow the world, for by the lasso of your curl
the ill-wisher's neck has been caught in chains.

The turning of the heavens runs wholly on the path of justice;
be glad, for the oppressor will not find the way to his goal.

Hafez, the pen of the world's King apportions everyone's daily bread;
do not trouble yourself with idle thoughts about your living.
