Hafez · The cup of Jamshid was within
For a long time you have been looking far away for something you already carry. Like the heart in this ghazal, which begged strangers for the cup it held all along, you may be asking others for a certainty that only your own clear sight can give. Take your question, as Hafez did, to someone wise and cheerful, and listen. The answer is less hidden than you fear; it has been with you, as God was with the one who cried out from afar. Trust what you know, keep your own counsel, and the riddle will open.
For years my heart begged the cup of Jamshid from me,
and what it already held, it craved from strangers.
A pearl that lies outside the shell of time and place
it was seeking from those lost upon the seashore.
Last night I took my problem to the pir-e moghan,
who, with the strength of his gaze, would solve the riddle.
I found him glad and laughing, a cup of wine in hand,
and in that mirror he was watching a hundred kinds of sights.
I said, "When did the Sage give you this world-seeing cup?"
He said, "On the day He was making this azure dome."
A man without a heart: in every state God was with him;
he did not see Him, and from afar kept crying, "O God!"
All this conjuring that was being worked here
was Samiri's, played before the staff and the shining hand.
He said, "That friend through whom the gallows' head was raised —
his crime was this: he made the secrets plain."
If the grace of the Holy Spirit lends its help again,
others too may do what the Messiah did.
I asked him, "What is the chain of the idols' curls for?"
He said, "Hafez was complaining of his frenzied heart."
