The faal · joy

The fast is over and the new moon has appeared: this ghazal marks a turning from hardship to celebration. Whatever discipline you have been keeping, Hafez suggests its true reward comes to the one who also visits the place of love. Trust the counsel of those who see with experience, and the plain truth of a heart over the polished words of a sermon. Do not let anyone's contempt make you small. A season of joy has been signalled; meet it with gratitude.

The ghazal in English

Come, for the Turk of the sky has plundered the table of the fast;
the new moon of the feast has signalled for the cup to go round.

The reward of fasting and of an accepted pilgrimage went to the one
who made his pilgrimage to the dust of love's tavern.

Our true home is a corner of the tavern;
may God reward the one who built it.

What is the price of ruby-coloured wine? The jewel of reason.
Come, for whoever made this trade has made a profit.

Only he can pray within the curve of those mihrab-like brows
who has made his ablution in the blood of his heart.

Alas, today the roving narcissus eye of the city's sheikh
looked upon the dreg-drinkers with contempt.

Look upon the beloved's face, and be grateful to my eye,
for the experienced one looks with true insight.

Hear the tale of love from Hafez, not from the preacher,
though the preacher worked much artifice into his phrasing.
