Hafez · Ghazal 133 · The Sufi laid his snare

The faal · honesty

This ghazal is a warning against pretence, both other people's and your own. Someone may be showing a pious face while laying a snare; be like the wise partridge and do not trust the cat just because it has begun to pray. In your own dealings, play straight: love closes its door to whoever uses tricks. In time the truth shows what was real and what was only show. Take refuge in honesty, and you will have nothing to fear from that day.

The ghazal in English

The Sufi laid his snare and opened his box of tricks;
he began a scheme of deceit against the trickster sky.

The sky's game will break the egg in his cap,
because he displayed his conjuring to those who know the secret.

Saqi, come, for the lovely beloved of the Sufis
has come once more to show herself and has begun her coquetry.

Where is this minstrel from, who played in the mode of Iraq
and then turned his tune back along the road of Hejaz?

O heart, come, let us go to God's refuge
from the one with short sleeves and long hands.

Do not use artifice, for whoever did not play at love honestly,
love shut the door of meaning in the face of his heart.

Tomorrow, when the court of truth appears,
ashamed will be the traveller whose work was built on illusion.

O graceful-stepping partridge, where are you going? Stop!
Do not be deceived because the zahid's cat has begun to pray.

Hafez, do not reproach the rends, for in pre-eternity
God made us free of the need for hypocritical piety.
