Ablution in wine

Hafez

With the bright water of wine a knower made his ablution

at dawn, when he paid his visit to the tavern.

As soon as the golden cup of the sun had disappeared,

the new moon of the feast signalled for the cup to go round.

Happy the prayer and supplication of the one who, from his pain,

made his ablution with his tears and the blood of his heart.

The master's imam, who loved to make his prayers long,

has washed his cloak in the blood of the daughter of the vine.

My heart paid with its life for the turmoil of her curl's ring;

I do not know what profit it saw in making this trade.

If the leader of the congregation asks for me today,

tell him that Hafez has made his ablution with wine.
