Madder, indigo and abrash

رنگرزی

Before synthetic dyes, every colour in a Persian rug came from a root, a leaf, a husk or a rind. The shifts in shade they left behind are part of how an old rug is read.

The story

Persiahaus Studio drew three dye pots of madder red, indigo and saffron yellow with madder root, indigo leaves and a split pomegranate above them, beside a long red rug whose field shifts shade in bands, the abrash of natural dyes, inside a ruled frame.

Before synthetic dyes, every colour in a Persian rug came from a root, a leaf, a husk or a rind. The shifts in shade they left behind are part of how an old rug is read. The full story is told in the Rugs section.
