Hafez · Remember the day of union

The faal · remembrance

This is a verse of tender remembrance. Perhaps you are missing a time, a place or a circle of people who once made your days bright. Hafez does not ask you to forget; he asks you to remember with gratitude, even if others seem to have moved on. Recalling those who were faithful to you can strengthen you through the present difficulty. Bitterness passes; what was good remains good. Hold your memories kindly, and let them remind you that warmth like that can come again.

The ghazal in English

Remember the day of union with the friends; remember;
remember those times; remember.

My mouth has become like poison with the bitterness of grief:
remember the cheerful cry of the happy drinkers.

Though the friends are free of any thought of me,
a thousand times may I remember them.

I have been caught in this bondage and trial;
remember the efforts of those who honoured what is due.

Though a hundred rivers flow constantly in my eyes,
remember the Zayandeh-rud of the garden-makers.

Hafez's secret will remain unspoken from now on;
alas, remember the keepers of secrets.
