The scent of your curling tresses
Hafez
The scent of your curling tresses keeps me forever drunk;
the beguiling of your magic eye ruins me moment by moment.
After so much patience, O Lord, may there come a night
when we light the candle of our eyes in the prayer-niche of your eyebrow?
I hold dear the dark of the tablet of my sight for this reason:
that my soul may have a copy of the tablet of your dark mole.
If you wish to adorn the whole world forever,
tell the breeze to lift the veil from your face for a while.
And if you wish to banish the custom of dying from the world,
shake out your hair, so that a thousand souls pour from every strand.
I and the poor morning breeze are two wanderers with nothing to show:
I am drunk from the spell of your eyes, and it from the scent of your tresses.
What lofty aspiration Hafez has! Of this world and the next,
nothing comes into his eyes but the dust at the head of your street.
