Something has happened that you keep turning over: a hurt, a misunderstanding, a careless word. Hafez answers each with the same light refrain: if it happened, let it go. He does not deny the wrong; he simply refuses to carry it. On the path of love, he says, there is no room for grudges, and every cloud passes once the sky clears. Ignore those who stir up trouble, forgive what passed between friends, and give yourself the freedom to move on.
If some wrong came from the hand of your musky curl, so be it;
and if your dark mole was harsh to us, so be it.
If the lightning of love burned the harvest of a wool-clad Sufi, so be it;
if a triumphant king was cruel to a beggar, so be it.
On the path there should be no grudge in the heart; bring wine:
every cloud you see, once it has cleared, is gone.
Love's play needs endurance, O heart; stand firm:
if there was weariness, there was; if there was a wrong, so be it.
If a glance from the beloved carried off a heart, it did;
and if something passed between the soul and the beloved, so be it.
Tale-bearers have stirred up much annoyance, but
if some unkind word passed between companions, so be it.
Tell the preacher not to fault Hafez for leaving the Sufi lodge:
why bind the foot of freedom? If he went somewhere, he went.
