Ghazal · 14th century

If it happened, let it go

Hafez

If some wrong came from the hand of your musky curl, so be it;

and if your dark mole was harsh to us, so be it.

If the lightning of love burned the harvest of a wool-clad Sufi, so be it;

if a triumphant king was cruel to a beggar, so be it.

On the path there should be no grudge in the heart; bring wine:

every cloud you see, once it has cleared, is gone.

Love's play needs endurance, O heart; stand firm:

if there was weariness, there was; if there was a wrong, so be it.

If a glance from the beloved carried off a heart, it did;

and if something passed between the soul and the beloved, so be it.

Tale-bearers have stirred up much annoyance, but

if some unkind word passed between companions, so be it.

Tell the preacher not to fault Hafez for leaving the Sufi lodge:

why bind the foot of freedom? If he went somewhere, he went.
