Hafez · Ghazal 82 · That fairy-faced Turk

The faal · reconnection

Someone has stepped away, and you may not know why. Hafez grieves openly, then turns to prayer, trusting that what was lost can be found again. His final line is the heart of this ghazal: go and ask after the people you care about while you still can. If you are the one waiting, keep your prayer alive. If you are the one who left, a single step back, a kind question, may mean more than you know. Do not let pride keep you apart.

The ghazal in English

That fairy-faced Turk who left our side last night,
what fault did she see, that she took the road of error?

Since that world-seeing eye went from my sight,
no one knows what has flowed from my eyes.

Last night, from the fire of the heart, there did not rise over the candle
the smoke that rose over my head from the burning within.

Far from your face, moment by moment, from the corner of my eye
came floods of tears and a storm of trouble.

We fell to the ground when the grief of parting came;
we died of the pain when the cure slipped from our hands.

The heart said, "Union with her can be won back by prayer";
for a lifetime now, all my life has gone in prayer.

Why put on the pilgrim's robe, when that qibla is not here?
Why strive in the running, when purity has left Marwa?

Yesterday the physician, seeing me, said with sorrow:
"Alas, your illness has passed beyond the canon of healing."

O Friend, take a step to ask after Hafez,
before they say he has gone from this passing world.
