Hafez · Your beauty took the world

You carry a fire within you that is greater than you show, and the verse suggests you need not reveal all of it yet. Like the candle, some secrets are best kept until the time is right. Perhaps you have stood at the edge of things, untouched, and now life has drawn you into the centre. Do not resist this. Shake off the troubles of the age, as Hafez says, and let them fall from your sleeves. Those who have ripened learn to carry heavy things lightly.
Your beauty, in concert with charm, took the world;
yes, in concert one can take the world.
The candle meant to reveal the secret of those in retreat;
thank God, its heart's secret caught fire on its tongue.
Of this hidden fire that is in my breast,
the sun is a flame that caught in the sky.
The rose wanted to boast of the Friend's colour and scent;
the breeze, in jealousy, stopped its breath in its mouth.
I was going about at ease on the rim, like a compass;
at last time, like the centre point, took me in the middle.
That day, the longing for the wine-cup burned my harvest,
when fire caught it from the reflection of the saqi's cheek.
I shall go to the Magians' lane, shaking out my sleeves
of these troubles that have seized the skirt of the end of time.
Drink wine, for whoever saw the end of the world's affairs
rose light from sorrow and took up a heavy cup.
On the rose petal they have written in the blood of the anemone:
"Whoever has ripened has taken up wine like the redbud."
Hafez, since the water of grace drips from your verse,
how could the envious find any fault in it?
