Ghazal · 14th century

Now the breeze of paradise blows

Hafez

Now that the breeze of paradise blows from the garden,

here I am, with joy-giving wine and a beloved of heavenly nature.

Why should the beggar not boast of kingship today,

when his tent is the shade of a cloud and his banquet hall the edge of a field?

The meadow is telling the tale of the month of spring:

he is no wise man who buys on credit and leaves paradise in hand.

Build up the heart with wine, for this ruined world

means to make bricks from our dust.

Do not look for faithfulness from an enemy, for it gives no light

when you kindle the cloister candle from the lamp of a temple.

Do not blame me, a drunkard, for a darkened record;

who knows what destiny wrote upon his brow?

Do not hold back your steps from the funeral of Hafez,

for though he is drowned in sin, he is going to paradise.
