Hafez · Ghazal 78 · Did you see?
Perhaps someone has let you down, or a promise was not kept, and you are hurt. Hafez feels the same, yet his first words are a prayer that the one who hurt him not be punished. He even wonders whether the trouble came from his own luck rather than from any lack of kindness. This generous view does not deny your pain; it frees you from bitterness. What you have suffered has also deepened you. Keep your own cup clear, speak well, and let the matter rest.
Did you see? The beloved had no thought but cruelty and wrong;
she broke her promise and had no care at all for our grief.
O Lord, do not punish her, though she brought down
my dove-like heart and killed it, and did not honour the quarry of the sanctuary.
The cruelty came to me from my own fortune; otherwise the beloved,
God forbid, did not lack the custom of kindness and the way of generosity.
For all that, whoever did not suffer some slight from her
was held in respect by no one, wherever he went.
Saqi, bring wine, and tell the morals officer:
do not deny us, for even Jamshid never had such a cup.
Every traveller who did not find the way to the sanctuary of her door,
poor soul, crossed the valley and never reached the shrine.
Hafez, carry off the prize of eloquence, for the pretender
had no skill at all, and no knowledge either.
