No refuge but your threshold

Hafez

I have no refuge in the world but your threshold;

there is no place to rest my head but this door.

When the enemy draws his sword, I throw down my shield,

for my only sword is a lament and a sigh.

Why should I turn my face from the street of the tavern,

when there is no custom or way in the world better than this?

If time sets fire to the harvest of my life,

tell it, "Burn," for to me it is not worth a blade of straw.

I am the servant of the roguish narcissus of that slender cypress,

who, drunk on the wine of pride, will not glance at anyone.

Do not go about hurting others, and do whatever you wish,

for in our law there is no sin but this.

Ride with a tight rein, O king of the realm of beauty,

for there is no roadside without someone pleading for justice.

Since I see snares along the road on every side,

I have no refuge better than the shelter of her curl.

Do not give the treasury of Hafez's heart to the curl and the mole,

for affairs like these are beyond the reach of every dark one.
