The faal · the present

Hafez invites you to stop chasing the Anqa, the bird nobody can catch. Some goal or hope may have kept your net spread for a long time, holding only wind. Gather it in. What is clear and good is already in the cup before you, if you will look. Time at the banquet is short, so savour what is given rather than demanding that it last for ever. It is never too late to do something worthy, and your faithful service has not gone unseen.

The ghazal in English

Come, Sufi, for the cup has become a clear mirror,
so that you may see the clarity of the ruby-coloured wine.

Ask the secret behind the veil of the drunken rends,
for this state is not known to the ascetic of high station.

The Anqa becomes no one's prey; take in your net,
for there the net only ever holds the wind.

At the banquet of time, drink a cup or two and go;
that is, do not hope for a union that lasts.

O heart, youth has gone and you plucked no rose of pleasure;
now in your old age, do something worthy of honour and name.

Strive for the pleasure that is ready to hand, for when the watering-place was gone,
Adam let go of the garden, the Abode of Peace.

We have many claims of service at your threshold;
O master, look again with compassion upon your servant.

Hafez is a disciple of the cup of wine; O breeze, go
and from this servant carry greetings to the Shaykh of Jam.
