Hafez · Ghazal 6 · Who will carry this prayer

The faal · hope

You may be waiting at a distance, hoping a word on your behalf will reach someone who could change things. Hafez sends his prayer through others and through the morning breeze, and he keeps hoping all night long. Do the same: take refuge in what is higher rather than in quarrels with those who stand in your way. Remember too that whoever has plenty does well not to turn away the one who asks. Rise early, keep your heart open, and trust that a sincere morning prayer has its effect.

The ghazal in English

Who will carry this prayer to the sultan's attendants:
"In thanks for your kingship, do not drive the beggar from your sight"?

From the demon-natured rival I take refuge in my God;
perhaps that piercing shooting star will lend some help, for God's sake!

If your black lashes have signalled for our blood,
think of their deceit and make no mistake, my lovely one.

You burn the heart of a whole world when you light up your cheek;
what do you gain from it, that you show no gentleness?

All night I live in this hope, that the morning breeze
will comfort a friend with a message from the friends he knows.

What a resurrection, my soul, you have shown the lovers!
Heart and soul be a ransom for your face: show us your cheek.

For God's sake, give a sip to Hafez, who rises at dawn,
so that his morning prayer may work its effect for you.
