The faal · friendship

You may feel a little shipwrecked, carrying a feeling you can no longer keep hidden. Hafez calls for a favouring wind, and it may come sooner than you think, bringing a familiar face back into view. Meanwhile he offers the ease of both worlds in two short phrases: generosity with friends, forbearance with those who oppose you. Good fortune is brief, so use it to be kind. Do not stiffen into pride; soften, and allow yourself joy even in lean times.

The ghazal in English

My heart is slipping from my hand; O you who have hearts, for God's sake!
Alas, the hidden secret will become plain.

We are shipwrecked; O favouring wind, rise up,
that perhaps I may see again the face of the one I know.

The ten-day kindness of the turning sky is a fable and a spell;
do good to your friends, my friend, and count it an opportunity.

In the circle of rose and wine, last night the nightingale sang sweetly:
"Bring the morning draught! Wake up, O you drunkards!"

O generous one, in thanks for your own well-being,
show kindness one day to the destitute dervish.

The ease of both worlds is the meaning of these two words:
with friends, generosity; with enemies, forbearance.

They did not let us pass into the lane of good name;
if you do not approve, then change destiny.

That bitter one the Sufi calls the mother of vices
is more desirable to us, and sweeter, than a kiss from maidens.

In time of hardship, strive for pleasure and intoxication,
for this alchemy of being turns a beggar into Qarun.

Do not be headstrong, lest in jealousy, like a candle, you be burnt
by the heart-stealer in whose hand hard granite is wax.

The mirror of Alexander is the cup of wine; look,
that it may show you the state of Darius's realm.

The Persian-speaking fair ones are bestowers of life;
saqi, give the good news to the abstinent rends.

Hafez did not put on this wine-stained cloak by his own will;
O shaykh of pure skirts, hold us excused.
