Hafez · Ghazal 432 · Hung over from the cup of love
You have been waiting and hoping, living perhaps more in imagination than in what is actually before you. Hafez understands this ache and asks for music and wine to soften it. But his last couplet is honest and kind: a mirage does not quench thirst. Look at what you are longing for and ask whether it is real water or a shimmer on the sand. Keep your hope, but give your heart to what can truly answer it.
I am hung over from the cup of love: saqi, give me wine;
fill the goblet, for without wine the gathering has no lustre.
The praise of her moonlike face does not come right in this mode;
minstrel, strike up a tune; saqi, give me wine.
My figure has bent into a ring, so that from now on your rival
cannot drive us from this door by any means.
Waiting for your face, there is only us and our hoping;
in the coquetry of union with you, only us, a fancy and a dream.
I am hung over from those two eyes: where is a cup?
I am sick for those two rubies: at least, an answer?
Hafez, why do you set your heart on fancies of the fair?
When was the thirsty ever quenched by the glimmer of a mirage?
