You have found something that feels like the water of life, and Hafez rejoices with you. Do not spend this moment worrying over the past or the great names of history; the rose has stepped out of seclusion into the garden, and so may you. Keep what is precious private, and enjoy it fully. Then, as Hafez advises himself, fall quiet for a while. Some truths are told best without words, the way the reed flute speaks of its longing.
I kiss her lip and drink down the wine;
I have found my way to the water of life.
I can neither tell her secret to anyone,
nor bear to see anyone with her.
The cup kisses her lip and drinks blood;
the rose sees her face and breaks into a sweat.
Pour the cup of wine and do not speak of Jamshid,
for who knows when Jamshid was, and when Kay?
Strike the harp's strings, O moon-faced minstrel;
pluck its vein, so that I may cry out with it.
The rose has carried its seat from seclusion into the garden;
fold up the carpet of piety, as the bud folds.
Like her eye, do not leave the drunken one in his hangover;
in memory of her ruby lip, saqi, pour the wine.
The soul will never seek to leave that body
in whose veins and sinews runs the blood of her cup.
Hold your tongue a while, Hafez,
and hear the story of the tongueless from the reed.
