Hafez · Ghazal 416 · The amber-scented breeze

The faal · renewal

A fragrant breeze has risen at dawn, and with it a longing to find your way to a place, or a person, that means a great deal to you. Hafez asks a blessed bird to guide him, and you may find that guidance arrives in just this light, unexpected way. Look at the thin new moon: it is small, but it is the start of something full. Be patient with yourself and ask others to be patient too. You have only just begun.

The ghazal in English

How sweet the amber-scented breeze, a longed-for fragrance
that rose at early dawn in longing for you.

Be our guide on the road, O bird of blessed face,
for my eyes have turned to water in longing for the dust of that court.

In memory of my wasted body, drowned in the heart's blood,
look at the new moon at the edge of the horizon.

It is I who go on breathing without you: what shame!
Unless you forgive, what excuse is there for such a sin?

It was from your friends that it learned the way of love,
the dawn, when the breeze tore open its black robe.

The day I leave the world for love of your face,
a red rose will spring from my grave in place of grass.

Do not let weariness with me trouble your delicate mind so soon,
for your Hafez has only just said, "In the name of God."
