Hafez · Ghazal 417 · My pleasure is constant

The faal · gratitude

Things are going your way, and Hafez invites you to say so with gratitude: praise be to God. Let fortune, which has so often been unruly, now hold close what you love. Others may tell stories about you or judge the path you have chosen; that is their affair. What matters is the warmth you have found. Remember too the times of absence and tears, not to cling to them, but so that you treasure this sweetness as fully as it deserves.

The ghazal in English

My pleasure is constant, from the longed-for ruby;
my affairs go as I wish, praise be to God.

O unruly fortune, hold her close in your arms;
now drain the golden cup, now the longed-for ruby.

They have made a legend of us for our rendi,
those ignorant elders, those misguided sheikhs.

We have repented of the zahid's ways,
and of the worshipper's deeds, God forgive us!

My soul, what can I say? The story of your absence:
one eye and a hundred tears, one soul and a hundred sighs.

May no unbeliever see the grief that has been seen
by the cypress from your stature and the moon from your cheek.

Longing for your lip has driven from Hafez's memory
the lesson of the night and the litany of dawn.
