Hafez · Ghazal 365 · For a lifetime, on the road of your sorrow

The faal · patience

You have given much of yourself to one great love or purpose, setting aside show and the noise of other people's opinions. Hafez reminds you that what is truly worth having, well-being and a quiet sovereignty of the heart, is not won by force. Like those who watch for the new moon from a corner of hope, wait with open eyes for the sign you long for. Your heart is not lost; you know exactly where you have placed it. Keep faith with that choice, and let patience do what pushing cannot.

The ghazal in English

For a lifetime we have set our face to the road of your sorrow,
and set aside the pretence and show of people.

The arches and porches of the college, the clamour of learning,
we have laid down on the road of the cup and the moon-faced saqi.

We have given our soul to those two bewitching narcissus eyes,
and laid our heart on those two dark hyacinth curls.

A lifetime has passed in which, hoping for a sign,
we have kept an eye on the two corners of that eyebrow.

We did not take the realm of well-being with an army;
we did not set up the throne of kingship by strength of arm.

Let us see what game the magic of the friend's eye will play, for again
we have built our foundation on a sorcerer's glance.

Without his unruly curl, our love-crazed head, from sorrow,
we have rested, like the violet, on our knee.

In the corner of hope, like those who watch for the new moon,
we have fixed the eye of seeking on that curving eyebrow.

You said: “Hafez, where is your wandering heart?”
We have laid it in the rings of that curling hair.
