Hafez · Ghazal 364 · We carefree drunkards

The faal · self-acceptance

People may misread you, drawing the bow of blame or seeing only the surface, the colours and the fancies. Hafez answers simply: look past the image, for underneath he is the same plain, clean slate. He admits he has strayed from the road and asks the guide for help without excuses. If you have stumbled, own it gently and ask for help; that honesty is its own way back. The mark you carry on your heart is not a flaw. Like the anemone, you were born with it.

The ghazal in English

We, the carefree drunkards, have let our hearts slip from our hands;
we are confidants of love and companions of the wine cup.

Many have drawn the bow of blame against us
since we opened our way by the beloved's eyebrow.

O rose, last night you bore the brand of the morning draught;
we are that anemone which was born with its brand.

If the Magian elder has grown weary of our repentance,
tell him: clear the wine, for we stand here to make amends.

It all depends on you; give us help, guide of the road,
for we confess it fairly: we have fallen from the road.

Like the tulip, do not look at the wine and the cup in our hands;
see this brand we have set on our bleeding heart.

You said: “Hafez, what are all these colours and fancies?”
Do not look at the false image, for we are still that blank tablet.
