The faal · the present moment

A fresh morning is breaking for you: dew on the tulip, a breeze from paradise, the rose on its emerald throne. Hafez calls his friends to enjoy it together and not let the moment pass. Perhaps a door you hoped to walk through has been shut for now. His answer is a short prayer, not a complaint: open it, O Opener of doors. In a season this lovely, closed doors do not stay closed for long. Stay with your companions, notice the beauty already around you, and keep asking.

The ghazal in English

Morning is breaking, and the cloud has pitched its canopy;
the morning draught, the morning draught, O companions!

Dew is dripping on the tulip's cheek;
wine, wine, O beloved friends!

The breeze of paradise is blowing from the meadow;
come, drink pure wine, breath after breath.

The rose has set up its emerald throne in the meadow;
take hold of the wine that glows like a fiery ruby.

They have shut the tavern door once more:
open it, O Opener of doors!

Your lips and teeth have a claim of salt
on our souls and our breasts roasted with longing.

In a season such as this it would be strange
for them to hurry to close the tavern.

Before the face of the saqi with a fairy's form,
drink pure wine, like Hafez.
