Your fortune may seem to have been sleeping, but Hafez sees a bright face splashing water on its eyes: it is ready to wake. Even if you are far from the place or person you love, he reminds you that distance cannot reach your devotion. Ask, as he does, for a small sign carried on the breeze, a posy of roses, a scent from the garden, and be grateful when it comes. Keep your mind gathered even when things around you are scattered, say your prayer, and let others say amen with you.
O you from whose shining face the moon of beauty takes its glow,
the well of your chin is the very lustre of loveliness.
My soul, come up to my lips, is longing to see you:
shall it go back, or go out? What is your command?
No one, in the reign of your narcissus eyes, gained any share of safety;
better that the chaste not sell their chastity to those drunk on you.
Our sleepy fortune will surely wake at last,
since your shining face has splashed water on its eyes.
Send with the breeze a posy of roses from your cheek,
that perhaps we may catch a scent from the soil of your garden.
Long life and your heart's desire, saqis of Jamshid's banquet,
though our cup was never filled with wine in your time.
My heart is running to ruin; let the heart's keeper know.
Take care, friends, by my life and by yours.
O Lord, when will this wish come true, that they join hands:
our gathered mind and your scattered curl?
Keep your hem clear of dust and blood when you pass by us,
for on this road many lie slain, a sacrifice to you.
Hafez is saying a prayer; listen, and say amen:
may our daily bread be your sugar-scattering ruby lip.
O breeze, tell the dwellers of the city of Yazd from us:
"May the heads of the ungrateful be a ball for your polo stick."
Though we are far from the carpet of nearness, our devotion is not far:
we are servants of your king and singers of your praise.
O king of kings, of lofty star, for God's sake, a little grace,
so that, like the stars, I may kiss the dust of your palace.
