Hafez · Ghazal 52 · For a long time love has been my faith

The faal · devotion

Love has taught you more than you may realise, even how to speak, and the grief that comes with it has its own strange joy. Hafez asks for the wealth of simplicity rather than grandeur, knowing that the King makes his home in a humble heart. He sees too that when you walk towards what you truly seek, even the thorns along the road feel like roses. Ask for eyes that see beneath the surface. Keep your heart modest and your aim clear, and the hard stretches of your road will soften.

The ghazal in English

For a long time now, passion for the fair ones has been my faith;
the grief of this affair is the joy of my grieving heart.

To see your face one needs an eye that sees the soul,
and where has my world-seeing eye such rank?

Be my friend, for the ornament of the sky and the adornment of the age
come from the moon of your face and my Pleiades of tears.

Since love of you taught me how to speak,
the praise and admiration of me is on every tongue.

O God, grant me the fortune of poverty,
for this grace is the cause of my dignity and standing.

Preacher, you who court the constable, do not peddle such grandeur,
for the sultan's lodging is my humble heart.

O Lord, whose place of gazing is this Kaaba of desire,
whose desert thorns along the road are my roses and eglantine?

Hafez, tell no more the tale of Parviz's splendour,
for his lip drinks only the dregs of my sweet Khosrow.
