Hafez · Ghazal 478 · Drink a full measure

The faal · steadfastness

This short ghazal is a call to openness. Hafez asks you to keep your heart open like a cup, not sealed like a jar, and to let go of some of the weight of "I" and "me". At the same time he asks for steadiness: be like stone in your resolve, not like water that takes on every colour around it. If you have been holding back or bending to others' opinions, this is a moment to be both open-hearted and firm. Set grief aside, rise, and give yourself to what you love.

The ghazal in English

Drink down a full measure of wine,
so that with it you may tear the root of grief from your heart.

Keep your heart open, like the cup of wine;
how long will you stay sealed and sullen, like a lowly jar?

When you drink a measure from the cup of selflessness,
you will boast less of "I" and "me".

Be like stone, steady in your step, not like water,
all mixing of colours and wet hems.

Bind your heart to wine, so that, boldly,
you may break the neck of hypocrisy and show piety.

Rise and strive like Hafez, so that perhaps
you may cast yourself at the beloved's feet.
