Drink a full measure

Hafez

Drink down a full measure of wine,

so that with it you may tear the root of grief from your heart.

Keep your heart open, like the cup of wine;

how long will you stay sealed and sullen, like a lowly jar?

When you drink a measure from the cup of selflessness,

you will boast less of "I" and "me".

Be like stone, steady in your step, not like water,

all mixing of colours and wet hems.

Bind your heart to wine, so that, boldly,

you may break the neck of hypocrisy and show piety.

Rise and strive like Hafez, so that perhaps

you may cast yourself at the beloved's feet.
