Hafez dreams of a rising moon and is told what it means: the one who went away is coming back. Let this dream be a gentle word for you. What has been absent may find its way home, drawn by the memory of good company. Remember that grace is not won by force or wealth; it comes as a gift. Keep a heart as wide as the sea, stay brave and patient, and keep the door open for what is returning.
Last night I dreamt that a moon was rising,
whose shining face brought the night of separation to an end.
The dream was read: "The beloved who went travelling is coming."
If only she would come in through the door as soon as can be.
Bless the memory of my saqi of happy omen,
who always came in through the door with goblet and cup.
How good it would be if she saw her home in a dream,
so that the memory of its company might guide her back to us.
If eternal grace could be won with force and gold,
the water of Khezr would have fallen to Alexander's lot.
May that time be remembered, when from roof and door
every moment the beloved's messages and letters came to me.
When would your rival have found so much room for cruelty,
if the wronged had gone just one night to the judge's door?
The raw, who have never walked the road, what do they know of love's delight?
Seek one with a heart like the sea, a brave one beyond the rest.
As for the one who led you into hardness of heart,
I wish his foot had struck a stone.
If anyone else had written in the manner of Hafez,
he would have pleased the king who cherishes art.
