The faal · protection

You have given your heart, and others may not understand why; Hafez answers simply that they have not yet seen the face that you have seen. In the middle of longing and uncertainty, he places his trust in God, and this is his counsel for you: you may not know the whole road, but the night is not without a guide. Stay honest and without wrongdoing, ask for mercy where you need it, and walk on calmly. You are not lost.

The ghazal in English

Salma has taken my heart captive with her temple-locks,
and every day my spirit calls out to me.

My beloved, have mercy on me, who have lost my heart,
and grant me union in spite of the enemies.

Beloved, in the grief of the passion of your love
we have put our trust in the Lord of all His servants.

O you who reproach me for my love of Salma,
you ought first to look upon that lovely face.

Then, like me, your heart would be on this road,
drowned in love, in the sea of affection.

We will gladly pay the penalty
if you have seen a single wrong from us.

You will have to grieve for this heart, of necessity,
or else you will see what will not please you.

Hafez's heart has gone into the folds of your curl,
on a dark night, and God is the guide.
