The garden is in bloom and good friends are near; Hafez asks you to notice how sweet this is, because the rose season does not last. Even your night-time longings are heard and valued on the road of love. His deeper counsel comes from the free lily: in this old world, those who travel lightly fare best. Happiness is not bought in the market, and power does not guarantee it. Loosen your grip on what weighs you down, enjoy good company, and let a lighter heart lead you.
The garden's courtyard gives delight, and the company of friends is sweet;
may the rose season be blessed, for through it the wine-drinkers' time is sweet.
Every moment the breeze makes our soul's sense of smell glad;
yes, yes, the fragrant breath of devoted friends is sweet.
The rose, its veil not yet opened, has made ready to leave;
lament, nightingale, for the cry of the heart-wounded is sweet.
Good news to the sweet-singing bird: on the road of love
the Friend delights in the laments of those who wake at night.
There is no happiness in the market of the world, and if there is,
it is the way of the rends and the light-hearted ease of the free.
From the tongue of the free lily this reached my ear:
in this old monastery, the lot of the lightly laden is sweet.
Hafez, giving up the world is the path of a happy heart;
do not imagine that the lot of the world's rulers is sweet.
