Hafez · Ghazal 42 · To tell you of my heart

The faal · openness

Your heart wants simple, honest things: to speak and be heard, to listen to another heart, to open like a flower at dawn. Hafez names each longing plainly and without shame, and asks the breeze to help him through the night. Let this be your counsel. Do not spend your strength hiding what is already known; say what is true, gently, to the one who should hear it. Ask for help where you need it. A heart that speaks openly is ready to bloom when morning comes.

The ghazal in English

To tell you the state of my heart is my longing;
to hear the news of your heart is my longing.

See how raw my wish is: the story already spread abroad
I long to hide from the rivals.

On such a dear and noble Night of Power,
to sleep beside you until day is my longing.

Ah, a pearl as delicate as this,
to pierce it in the dark of night is my longing.

O breeze, come to my help tonight,
for to bloom at dawn is my longing.

For the honour of it, with the tips of my lashes
to sweep the dust of your road is my longing.

Like Hafez, in spite of the pretenders,
to speak the poetry of the rends is my longing.
