Hafez · Ghazal 424 · Do not part from me

The faal · love

Someone or something has become the light of your eyes and the rest of your restless heart, and you want to keep it close. Hafez supports that love; others who disapprove simply have not seen what you have seen. Yet his last couplet adds a gentle caution. If you have been met with a reproach, ask whether you reached a little beyond your measure. Hold what you love tenderly, within the size of your blanket, and it will stay near.

The ghazal in English

Do not part from me, for you are the light of my eyes,
the rest of my soul and the companion of my startled heart.

Lovers will not let go of the hem of your robe;
you have torn the shirt of their patience.

May no harm come to you from your own fortune's eye,
for in stealing hearts you have reached the height of beauty.

Do not forbid me her love, O mufti of the age;
I hold you excused, for you have never seen her.

That reproach the Friend made you, Hafez:
perhaps you stretched your feet beyond your blanket.
