The faal · love

Love has made you patient in ways you never were before. Things that once wearied you, you now bear gladly for the sake of what you care about. Hafez sees a kind of royalty in this: the beggar who loves wears his poverty like a crown. Do not let the one you love, or the dream you hold, burn you needlessly; ask gently to be met as sincerely as you give. Your devotion is not foolish. It is the song that makes the garden what it is.

The ghazal in English

Your musk-scented lock gives the violet its twist;
your heart-opening laughter tears the veil of the rosebud.

O my sweet-breathed rose, do not burn your own nightingale,
who prays for you sincerely all night long.

I, who once grew weary even of the breath of angels,
now bear the noise and chatter of a whole world for your sake.

See the fortune of love: out of poverty and pride
your beggar knocks the corner of the royal crown askew.

The cloak of piety and the cup of wine do not suit each other,
yet I paint all these pictures to win your pleasure.

The fever of the wine of your love will leave my head only
when this head full of longing is dust at the door of your house.

The royal seat of my eyes is the resting place of your image;
it is a place for prayer: my king, may your place never be without you.

Your cheek is a lovely meadow, the more so now that, in the spring of beauty,
sweet-spoken Hafez has become its singing bird.
