Looking at the new moon, a sickle in the green field of the sky, Hafez remembers his own sowing and wonders what his harvest will be. His fortune seems to have slept, but the answer comes: do not despair, for grace was given before you ever began. Travel light and pure, and even a small lamp can send its rays to the sun. Do not lean on the stars or on outward things; they pass. Let go of pretence, attend to what you are truly sowing, and walk on with hope.
I saw the green field of the sky and the sickle of the new moon;
I remembered my own sowing and the time of harvest.
I said: “O fortune, you have slept, and the sun has risen.”
It said: “Even so, do not despair of what was granted before.”
If you rise to heaven pure and unencumbered, like the Messiah,
from your lamp a hundred rays will reach the sun.
Do not rely on the night-thief star, for this rogue
carried off the crown of Kavus and the belt of Kay Khosrow.
Though the earring of gold and ruby weighs upon the ear,
the season of beauty passes; listen to counsel.
May the evil eye stay far from your mole, which on the board of beauty
moved a pawn that won the stakes from the moon and the sun.
Tell the sky not to boast of its grandeur, for in love
the moon's harvest goes for a barley-grain, and the Pleiades' cluster for two.
The fire of piety and hypocrisy will burn the harvest of faith;
Hafez, throw off this woollen cloak and go.
