The days of the rose pass quickly, as life does, and Hafez asks the saqi to hurry the cup. Like a bubble on wine, he says, look at the world with open eyes and see how lightly it is built. This is not a reason for fear but for presence: breathe the violet, see the tulip's colour, and do not postpone your gladness. Beneath the play of this ghazal lies a simple prayer that may also be yours: Lord, answer the prayer of those whose hearts are weary. Ask, and enjoy the season while it lasts.
Veil the rose petal with the musky hyacinth;
that is, cover your face and lay a whole world in ruins.
Scatter the dew of your face, and fill the borders of the garden
with rosewater, like the flasks of our eyes.
The days of the rose, like life, have hurried to be gone;
saqi, as you pass round the rose-coloured wine, hurry.
Open, with grace, your drunken, sleepy narcissus eye,
and send the lovely narcissus's eye to sleep with envy.
Breathe the violet's scent and take hold of the beloved's curl;
look at the colour of the tulip, and resolve on wine.
Since killing lovers is your custom and your habit,
drink with the enemies, and turn your reproach on us.
Like a bubble, open your eye upon the face of the cup,
and judge the foundation of this house by the bubble.
Hafez seeks union by way of prayer;
O Lord, answer the prayer of the broken-hearted.
