The faal · beauty

This is a ghazal of pure praise, a celebration of beauty in its springtime. Hafez sees in the beloved's face a new spring, a moon, a cypress fed by the water of life. Let it remind you to notice and honour the beauty that is near you now, in a person, a place or a moment, rather than waiting for something more perfect. Nature itself nurses what is lovely with tenderness. Allow yourself to be moved, to admire freely, and to be grateful that such beauty exists.

The ghazal in English

O you whose moon-like face is the new spring of beauty,
your mole and down are beauty's centre and its orbit.

In your languid eye the spell of magic lies hidden;
in your restless curl the stillness of beauty shows.

No moon has shone like you from the tower of goodness;
no cypress has risen like your stature from the stream-bank of beauty.

Your charm has made the age of heart-stealing glad;
your grace has made the times of beauty fortunate.

From the snare of your curl and the bait of your mole, in all the world
not one bird of the heart is left that beauty has not caught.

Always, with the kindness of nature's nurse, from the depth of the soul,
she raises you tenderly in beauty's arms.

The violet around your lip is fresh and moist because
it drinks the water of life from the stream of beauty.

Hafez has given up hope of seeing your equal;
there is no one but your face in the land of beauty.
